System update

Just wanted to post a note explaining that I’ve not been on email much the past few days. Between spending all weekend filming the DDR National Champtionships, ongoing back and neck pain, and our Internet connection being down at home, I’ve let a lot of messages slide. Bear with me. This is likely to continue through the end of the week.

Pastafarianism

If you haven’t been to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster webpage since the inital letter the author wrote to the Kansas School Board was posted — the one that insisted FSMism be taught alongside Intelligent Design in schools — it is worth going back.

Ideologies

I just accidentally found my way to the conservative City Journal, particularly an elderly article on how CUNY could be better by not being soft on minorities, and I am currently angrier than I’ve been in quite some time.

Plotnik? Plimpkin? Punkin?

Everyone knows that good ol’ Richard Plotkin is getting married, right? There was something apropos in him registering that cumbersome URL for the wedding. I saw him this summer, and he is in fine fettle. His wife is gorgeous. Good on ya, Plotkin, and many happy returns!

George Bush Don’t Like Black People

Look, let’s just try to clarify that. It’s not just that George Bush doesn’t like black people. George Bush doesn’t like poor people. The Republicans, in general, don’t like poor people. You think any of them would offer their homes to Katrina refugees who were already on Section 8 or in shelters? You think even you or I would fail to have second thoughts about offering your house to someone in persistently desperate circumstances? I just think we’re going to get farther with a critique of this administration which talks about how it screws poor people than one which isolates black people in their struggles.

College Trip to Boston

I recently took my protegee, Fabiola, on a trip to visit colleges in Boston. It was a grand success, with both of us learning a great deal, and we got to spend some time with my Boston buddies as well. Christine totally waxed my ass at Scrabble.

You can’t have it that way!

In doing some research for work, I happened upon this article which notes that McDonalds is doing research to find out how to make their employees’ uniforms “hipper”… and one of the companies they’re looking to is American Apparel.

More Maine News

And while I was at it, I thought I’d look up my other Maine friends online. It turns out that Ana and Rafi Keilt-Freyre have been making music. Following in daddy’s footsteps. Further searching indicates little sister Gracie is involved in running. Yay!

Crap — Chute in an Accident

Some weird sense that there was a disturbance in the force caused me to look up author, militia leader, and my-sometime-penpal Carolyn Chute online today, and Maine Indymedia, bless them, is reporting she and her husband, Michael, are in bad shape after an auto wreck a scant few days ago. It also reminds that they have no health insurance.

Andrews Family Reunion

Was home recently for the largest official family reunion we’ve ever had, which also marked my dad’s mom’s birthday. And we poured out libations for our fallen homies. (Thanks to Mom; some of these pictures are hers, included for completeness.)
